POLANOVICH

Martha Polanovich

Nominated by: Katherine Walsh

When I think of Martha I think of sunshine, laughter and love. I met Martha in February of 2006 in the infusion room at HEB Harris Methodist. It was my first time for chemo. She had on a cute fishing style hat, her glasses and a big smile on her face. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2005. She chatted with me and my husband like we were old friends. She put us at ease, made us laugh and by the time we left she had my name, address and phone number plus other tidbits of information.

Regardless of how she feels, Martha always has a smile on her face, a warm comment to give and a hug for you. She has an uncanny way of injecting humor into even the most difficult conversations. While the rest of us suffer from chemo brain, Martha can remember people's names, their diagnosis and little tidbits of information important to that person. She will help anyone. She has driven people to doctor's appointments, talked to total strangers on the phone about breast cancer, arranged get-togethers to keep people in touch, been there when people have lost loved ones, celebrated the triumphs of others, quietly helped others financially and keeps people in touch. She is always positive, always fun and conversations with her are always uplifting. She is the true essence of love, faith, hope, courage, strength and life.
