LANDIN

Rose C. Landin

All survivors are inspirational in my eyes. The determination and hope they show, in the face of a life-threatening illness and through painful and debilitating treatment is unmatched. So it's hard to single out one in the midst of thousands. But considering the challenges they face, it's especially remarkable to still be going strong at age 90. My nominee is Mrs. Rose Landin. She has been a survivor for some 14 years, and seeing her, you would never think she had been sick a day in her life. She has lived in the same Oak Lawn home for more than 60 years, where she and her husband raised two children. She retired after many years of service at Neiman Marcus downtown, but she didn't really retire. She still works every year at the State Fair of Texas in the information booth and at volunteer events with her daughter.

Last month, she celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at Ojeda's, and the room was packed with friends and family from throughout the years. Rose never sat down once because she wanted to be sure to visit with everyone. Among the guests was a classmate of her daughter's and his mother who had served with Rose in PTA more than 40 years earlier. It's this kind of celebration of life that all survivors work to achieve. I think seeing Rose Landin as an example will help people realize that it is possible.
