Daphne J. HornbuckleAs a young, vibrant 27-year old, I didn't have a care in the world until I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not quite ready to face the unknown road that lie ahead, I decided to obtain four different opinions, but the end result was the same, breast cancer. Prepared to fight, I spent countless hours in the oncology section of Barnes and Noble obtaining information. Armed only with knowledge, I was ready to face the journey ahead. Beating breast cancer was just the beginning of my battle. As a two-time survivor (surgery and chemotherapy in 1991 and again in 2003) and with a clean bill of health my battle continues, making a difference in the lives of other women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. It's my mission to help others faced with the same dreaded journey that I faced. I've volunteered with Sisters Network and the Adelphi New York State Breast Cancer Hotline, while in New York. I am a former board member of the Celebrating Life Foundation. I currently facilitate The Victorious Ones breast cancer awareness and support group for African American women. The Victorious Ones has participated in numerous Race for the Cure, Sister-to-Sister Fitness Festival, Joanie Hatcher Memorial Survivor Event, and countless other health fairs, forums, and workshops. My goal is to educate, counsel and provide emotional support to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. God has helped me through my ordeal and I want to help others. |
